LAPD Safety Presentation

LAHS is grateful for our ongoing partnership with the Los Altos Police Department. This week, Captain Katie Krauss and Juvenile Detective Timothy Krapivkin joined our staff meeting to review emergency response procedures in the event of a threat on or near campus. While these situations can be difficult to think about, it’s important that our staff are well-prepared and that everyone on campus, including students, understands how to respond in an emergency.

Our approach to campus safety emphasizes prevention through visibility, strong relationships, and early intervention. Emergency preparedness is another important component of that work. We regularly review and reinforce our procedures in collaboration with our community partners to help ensure that LAHS remains a safe and supportive environment where students can learn, grow, and connect.

Campus safety is a shared responsibility, and we encourage students and families to report any concerning behavior or situations so that we can respond early and appropriately. Students and parents can contact any school administrator directly. Students can also submit a safety tip using the reporting form linked in the Student Frequently Used Links document, available on our website and through QR codes posted around campus.

Earthquake Drill

The school held its annual earthquake drill on Friday. Students remained in their 2nd period classes, where they reviewed earthquake emergency response procedures and related resources and practiced how to respond in the event of an earthquake. This was a low-intensity drill focused on reviewing and rehearsing safety procedures rather than simulating an actual emergency. Once the drill concluded, students were released to attend the ACT of their choosing.

Lunch Line Improvements

This year, LAHS has been exploring ways to improve the lunch line experience for students, with two primary goals: making the lines safer and more accessible for students with disabilities or mobility challenges, and reducing wait times so students have more time to enjoy their lunch.
This week, we introduced a new salad-only lunch line. Students who want a salad can now get their food more quickly, while the separate line for sandwiches and hot entrées is shorter as a result. Initial feedback from students has been very positive, and we plan to continue with this new system.

We’re grateful to the students who reached out to administrators to share their concerns and ideas, helping to initiate conversations about how we could improve the lunch experience. We also appreciate the support of the MVLA District Office in providing the additional staffing needed to make this change possible.

We welcome continued feedback from students! Please encourage your student to speak with any administrator or submit a suggestion using the “Make a Suggestion” link in the Student Frequently Used Links document.

Wellness Updates

Thank you to allcove Palo Alto for coming out and collaborating with us on hosting a button crafting event in the wellness center! Students thoroughly enjoyed connecting with others and letting their creativity flow.

Next week we will be hosting a wellness workshop on the topic of sleep during ACT on Wednesday, October 21st. Did you know that roughly 70% of high school students do not get enough sleep on school nights? Sleep research suggests that teenagers need 9-10 hours of sleep every night. Adequate sleep supports the teenager’s developing brain, physical growth, and mental health. This workshop will focus on improving sleep hygiene and relaxation skills that your student can use to help improve their sleep. Please encourage your student to attend and reserve their spot on Minga in advance under Juan Arreola.
