Happy Staff Appreciation Week, May 11 - 15

As we celebrate Staff Appreciation Week, May 11–15, we want to recognize and thank every member of our LAHS school community for the critical role they play in supporting our students and families each day. Our certificated and classified staff work together to create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment where students can learn, grow, and thrive. From the classroom to the front office, from counseling and student support services to facilities, nutrition services, and campus supervision, every role contributes to the success of our school.
Staff Appreciation Week is an opportunity to reflect on the dedication, professionalism, compassion, and care our staff bring to their work each day, often behind the scenes. The positive relationships our staff build with students and families have a lasting impact, and we are deeply grateful for all they do to make our school community strong. Please join us in celebrating and thanking our incredible Los Altos High School staff throughout the week! Thank you, LAHS PTSA and MVLA Foundation, for helping us show our appreciation and ongoing support of our staff.

Nominate a Teacher Today!

2026 "Wholistic" Teacher Award
We look forward to your nomination!

CLICK HERE TO NOMINATE A TEACHER

Congratulations to Kelly Coble, Adriana Sanchez, and James Stiltner for earning the "Wholistic" Teacher Award in 2025!

We need your input once again!  For over 20 years, the "Wholistic" Teacher Award has honored teachers who not only challenged and motivated students in their classroom, but also showed interest in their students' activities and lives outside of class.

To qualify, a teacher must be an instructor at Los Altos High School for at least two years (including the current school year).  In addition, in order to recognize the many great teachers we have at LAHS, the teacher must also not have won the "Wholistic" Teacher Award in the previous five (5) years.  The previous five year winners are:

2020-2021:  Tory Johnson, Babak Shahrivar, and Jacob Sproule
2021-2022:  Krista Greksouk, Nancy Moran, and Adam Randall
2022-2023:  Jasmine Mark, Craig Seran, and Sasha Kassel
2023-2024:  Lauren Diez, Roger Kim, and Toni Smith
2024-2025:  Kelly Coble, Adriana Sanchez, and James Stiltner

Please help us continue the tradition of awarding another fantastic LAHS teacher with the "Wholistic" Teacher Award by filling out the survey below.  Students, parents and teachers are all welcome to make nominations. Winners will each be awarded $500 and their names will be inscribed on a plaque outside of the library.

"Wholistic" Teacher Award submissions due Friday May 22, 2026.

Recognition for Outstanding Artists

We are proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our Los Altos High School visual arts students, whose creativity and talent continue to earn recognition throughout the community and beyond.
This year, three students received honors in the Congressional Art Competition, recognized for their creativity, technical skill, and artistic voice. In addition, five students earned awards at ArtNow 2026, a juried exhibition hosted by the New Museum of Los Gatos that showcases exceptional high school artists from across Santa Clara County. We are honored to see our students’ work recognized by professional jurors and celebrated alongside some of the region’s top young artists.

We are also excited to share recent recognition of our National Art Honor Society students, whose semester-long mural project with Rancho Roben Rescues, a local farm animal rescue and sanctuary, was featured in the Town Crier. The students transformed shade fences, tool sheds, and chicken coops with vibrant murals, creating an immersive 360-degree artistic experience throughout the sanctuary. Their dedication, creativity, and community spirit truly went above and beyond, and we are incredibly proud to see their work bringing beauty and awareness to such a meaningful local organization.

Partnership with KMVT 15: Silicon Valley Community Media

Digital Communications 1 / Journalism students in Jodi Hwang's class visited the KMVT studio in Mountain View on Thursday. Students have been meeting with KMVT Executive Director, Alex Doherty the past few months to learn about video production and are working on video packages related to mental health. At the studio, students recorded stand-ups to discuss the focus and research of their projects.

Tutors of the Month

This month’s Tutors of the Month are Allison Ross, Lia Amirbekian, and Eliana Witteles. They have all been tutoring in Mr. Rasmussen’s classroom this school year. Mr. Rasmussen stated “Lia, Ellie, and Allie have been amazing peer tutors this school year. The most important aspect of being a peer tutor is allowing the students to feel comfortable and supported. Whether in English, Math, or Science, they are all knowledgeable and helpful. They have built trust with the students, which fosters ongoing support from the tutors. They also recognize that not everyone needs help every day, but are ready when a peer approaches them. It has been wonderful to see students who were at first wary of help, coming in asking to receive feedback or work on assignments. Thank you, Lia, Ellie, and Allie for all your hard work and support of the students.” We are thankful for Allison, Lia, and Eliana’s support!

Activities

Wellness

Next week we will be hosting a student favorite activity, diamond painting,  in the wellness center on Wednesday, May 13th during ACT. This mindful craft helps students to focus on the present moment by placing each rhinestone in its place. The repetitive and rhythmic motion is often experienced as soothing and can slow the mind and body down. Please encourage your student(s) to reserve their spot in advance on Minga under Juan Arreola.

We have some special visitors coming back to Los Altos High School on Friday, May 15th during lunch at the back field. Please encourage your student(s) to take a wellness break and spend some time with our visiting therapy dogs!
