California Department of Education visits MVLA
In late March, a representative from the California Department of Education visited MVLA to observe our English Language Development (ELD) program firsthand. After conducting walk-throughs across several classrooms, she came away impressed with the work our staff does every day to support students.
Her observations highlighted strong district-wide coherence in curriculum and student experience, a calm and welcoming campus culture, and a clear commitment to the Constructing Meaning framework. She also praised the strong relationships between teachers and students and the effective modeling of academic language throughout instruction.
We are proud of the dedication our teachers and staff bring to this work — and grateful for the opportunity to share it with our state partners.
MVLA CTE teachers collaborate with Campbell Union and EnCorps
MVLA’s CTE Program Specialist, Dr. Amber Woodward, and Campbell Union High School District’s Senior Coordinator of College and Career Readiness, Ms. Bari Sholomon, partnered with EnCorps Executive Director Angel Beamer to design and deliver a unique and impactful professional development session.
The event brought together over 60 CTE educators from more than seven Bay Area high schools across MVLA and CUHSD to strengthen CTE pathways through collaboration and real-world alignment.
Teachers were grouped by CTE industry pathway and engaged in hands-on unit planning, shared effective instructional practices, and connected with industry professionals through a panel discussion to better integrate career-connected learning into their classrooms. The session highlighted the power of cross-district collaboration, deepened pathway alignment, and reinforced a shared commitment to preparing all Santa Clara County students for postsecondary success and an evolving workforce.
Building on this success, the three educational leaders plan to expand the professional development opportunity next year by inviting an additional Bay Area district to participate.
Annual AVID PEAK and Alta Vista Mock Career Fairs a resounding success for students
On March 25, approximately 170 students participated in MVLA's 8th Annual AVID PEAK and 3rd Annual Alta Vista Mock Career Fairs — and the energy was electric! Students stepped into a realistic professional environment to practice elevator pitches, share their resumes for feedback, and explore diverse industries and career paths.
Nearly 40 organizations — from local small businesses and nonprofits to government offices and international corporations — joined us to share their expertise and invest in the future of our students. The enthusiasm on both sides was a powerful reminder of what's possible when community and schools come together. Thank you to everyone who made this day such a success!
MVLA Family Partnership Council (FPC) concludes the year with discussion of proposed bell schedules and LCAP
At the final meeting of the 2025-2026 school year, the FPC discussed and provided feedback on priorities for proposed changes to the bell schedule for next year and reviewed updates to the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). The potential bell schedule adjustments will be finalized through the official labor-management bargaining process. Based on negotiation outcomes, District staff may forward recommendations to the Board for approval.
The purpose of the FPC is to provide an opportunity for parents/families and district staff to:
build capacity for staff and family engagement in student learning
listen and learn from one another in a spirit of open-mindedness and respect,
examine issues from multiple perspectives and engage in collaborative discussions on issues impacting student learning,
co-create an ongoing feedback loop within the community of educational partners,
work together to promote equity for all students in the district,
develop stronger connections, continuity, and communication throughout the community
establish a consistent process for parental engagement in district-wide initiatives
with the explicit intent of improving learning outcomes for all students in the district.
