Thank you to our librarian Gordon Jack and English teacher April Oliver for their work organizing our 41st annual Writers Week at LAHS (pictured top left). Of course, we could not host this event with out the help of our PTSA, community volunteers, and incredible English teachers. We are the only high school program in the country that annually brings more than 30 writers to speak in every English classroom. Every year, the event brings a diverse and inspiring lineup of writers, poets and journalists to campus. This year’s theme focused on filmmaking and included television screenwriters Gideon Yago, Nikki Kashani (a LAHS alumna) and others. Last night’s Community Read event featured another LAHS alumnus: Imran J. Khan, who spoke with our own Film Analysis students about his career as a writer, editor and director. After their Q&A, the audience was shown his feature debut Mustache, which will be released this summer. |
Gustav Hehrne: Gustav Hehrne was nominated for Tutor of the Month by Mrs. Yu. Gustav tutored Trigonometry last semester and helped many students. Mrs. Yu stated “Gustav consistently gives up his ACT to come tutor students in Trigonometry. He is patient and listens carefully to the students and helps lead them towards figuring out concepts and solving problems on their own. Students know that he is here, so they will come just to get help.” We are grateful for Gustav’s support!
Joonseok Lee: Joonseok Lee was nominated for Tutor of the Month by Mr. Paredes. Joon tutors in multiple levels of math and science; he has tutored after school for the entire school year. Ms. Paredes stated “Joon consistently tutors after school from Tuesday through Thursday. He uses multiple tutoring strategies to cater to the needs of each student. He is patient and is extremely knowledgeable in all of the material that he supports students with!” We are grateful for Joon’s support!

Next week, the wellness center will be hosting a bracelet crafting event on Wednesday, March 11th during ACT. Although making a bracelet may seem deceptively simple, the activity provides several different benefits. The repetitive movements of sorting, knotting, and threading beads are both rhythmic and mindful which can support the body in downshifting to a calmer state. Creating a bracelet encourages creative self-expression through color choice, bead selection, and charm meaning. Please encourage your student(s) to participate in this fun, creative, and stress-relieving activity.
Students can reserve their spot on Minga under Juan Arreola.

We wrapped up an incredible Winter Season with our Girls Basketball team competing in the NorCal! We were able to celebrate all of our Winter teams at the Winter Sports Awards Night on Wednesday evening.
A big thank you to the Student-Athlete Leadership Team for their hard work in helping make the Winter Sports Award Night possible. Their time and effort contributed to a successful event.
A comprehensive list of all Fall and Winter Award recipients will be shared soon. In the meantime, we encourage the community to sign up for Athletics through ParentSquare to receive announcements regarding upcoming events and important Athletics information.
We are also in the process of updating the Athletics section of our website. If you have suggestions or would like to assist with this effort, please feel free to reach out to the Athletic Director at michelle.noeth@mvla.net.
The Athletic Department is also seeking volunteers to support several initiatives. We are looking for assistance with social media and publicity to help highlight the achievements of our student-athletes and programs. Additionally, we are seeking support with inventory and organizational projects within the department. If you are interested in volunteering in either of these areas, please contact the Athletic Director.

Nearly a quarter of US adults find themselves in the "sandwich generation"-- simultaneously caring for aging parents and raising children or supporting emerging adults-- a reality that brings profound emotional exhaustion, financial strain, guilt, and relational stress. Licensed clinical psychologist, couple therapist, and Northwestern University professor, Dr. Alexandra Solomon, will explore how this multigenerational caregiving uniquely impacts your marriage, family dynamics, and sense of self, often leaving you feeling stretched impossibly thin.

Students are invited to participate in the 16th Congressional District’s 2026 Congressional Art Competition! The theme this year revolves around the question: What does the United States of America’s 250th anniversary mean to you?
Every spring, the House of Representatives launches a nationwide high school art competition to discover and celebrate talented young artists and their work.
High school students residing in the 16th Congressional District are invited to participate by submitting their artwork in person to my San José office by Friday, April 17, 5:00 p.m. (PST). Our address is: 1101 S. Winchester Boulevard, Suite C-120 South, San José, California 95128.
All participating artists will be honored at a community reception, where the final winner will be announced. A panel of distinguished local artists will select the winning student, whose artwork will be displayed in the corridors of the U.S. Capitol—where members of Congress and thousands of visitors walk daily. The winner will receive two roundtrip airline tickets to travel to Washington, D.C., with a guardian to attend the unveiling of their artwork at the Capitol on June 25th.
You can find the student release form here. It must be signed by the teacher, student, and the student’s guardian(s) and attached to the artwork to certify its originality. Guidelines are listed below.

- Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
