Lunar New Year

Happy Year of the Horse!
As part of the Lunar New Year celebrations, our Mandarin teachers, Ms. Chen and Ms. Wei led a variety of class and school-wide activities, shown in this slidedeck. Also included in the slide deck are videos of the dragon and lion dance in the quad at lunch this week as well as a Gala show created by our students. We are so proud of their creativity and dedication! Many LAHS staff and students also received red envelopes for extra good luck:)

On behalf of LAHS and our Mandarin language program, we wish you a healthy, joyful, and prosperous new year.

CAASPP Testing

CAASPP testing will happen in classes March 23-27 with 11th grade English & Social Science and 12th grade Social Science Teachers. There is no special schedule.

Please help us get the word out about the importance of our LAHS students' participation in the tests, including WHY students should participate, and WHY the test matters to them, LAHS, and MVLA.

We must reach a 95% participation rate for the exams in order to not receive penalties for our scores. In whole numbers, that means if more than 26 students opt out, our scores do not accurately represent the academic progress of our students.

  • The test results provide the public with an objective, annual measure of our students’ progress in English, math, and science against state standards, ensuring they are on track for college and career readiness.
  • It helps identify academic strengths and areas needing support.
  • The data is used to make programmatic decisions and are heavily referenced in WASC reports, district measures of achievement, and by outside organizations as a measure of our school and district success.
  • The results include an equity check as it disaggregates achievement by demographic data such as students with IEPs, English learners to help us determine what programs or practices ensure all students are being taught to the same rigorous, high-quality standards.
  • If you have questions please reach out to Assistant Principal Morales Medina (fabian.moralesmedina@mvla.net)

Counseling Department

Counseling

This Monday, counselors began meeting with juniors for their individual appointments/junior interviews. Students receive an email from the counseling secretary (Mrs. Vallado) letting them know of their appointment day and time a week in advance.  Students can reach out to her or their counselor if they’re aware of a potential conflict (other appointment, in-class assessment, etc) and need to reschedule. In addition to receiving a physical copy of the College Counseling Handbook, they receive a warm handoff to the College and Career Center staff to learn about upcoming workshops/activities and other opportunities to support their postsecondary plans/goals.

MVLA Summer School will take place at Los Altos High School this summer. The dates are:
Session 1- June 10 - 24 (No School June 19th)
Session 2 - June 25 - July (No School July 3rd)
Students who earned a grade of D or F in a course required for graduation have been signed up for summer school. Counselors are also checking in with students who were marked as In Danger of Failing classes on the most recent progress report to connect them with academic resources available on campus.

Student Wellness

Events

With March around the corner, we will be hosting a potted clover origami craft in the wellness center on Wednesday, March 4th during ACT. Students will have the opportunity to craft some origami clovers and paint the pot they will be assembled in. Both painting and origami have been shown to reduce stress and promote mindfulness. Please encourage your student(s) to take a wellness break and to sign up on Minga under Juan Arreola. Check out our calendar for our upcoming wellness events in March!
