Monday we held our Diversity Rally to kick off diversity week. While a rally might from the outside seem like a small event, we believe that the Diversity Rally visibly reinforces our school’s commitment to respect, belonging, and student safety as well as helps students build empathy and unity in a time of increased polarization. The performances were a beautiful representation of our school community and signaled to all students that our differences are not threats but embodied beauty. Student clubs and individuals used performances and beautiful heritage clothing to make inclusion human, rather than abstract or theoretical. As always, our student spectators were enthusiastic, respectful, and supportive of the performances.
Sincerely,
Tracey Runeare, Principal

Diversity Week Recap

Today, Friday 1/30, concludes ASBs Diversity Week Celebration. ASB hosts a Diversity Assembly that showcases diverse student acts, including songs, dances, music, and more - this is a schoolwide favorite of each school year.

As a few of the ASB announcers at the assembly noted on Monday, we are “in our current political climate we are especially grateful to have the space to celebrate and acknowledge the diversity of our school - reminding us that diversity isn’t just something we talk about at our school—it’s something we share, experience, and move through together.”

During lunch throughout the week, students came together to learn about Neurodiversity and how to better support each other in the classroom, celebrated their self-expression with Green Team’s clothing swap, draw chalk messages in the quad with GSA to honor and celebrate Gender and Sexuality diversity and awareness, and enjoyed a game and snack from several of our cultural clubs.

Twin Oaks - Taiwanese Student Visit

Visiting for the 3rd year, Twin Oaks students from Taiwan join LAHS. In a culture exchange, Twin Oaks students started shadowing LAHS buddies through their school day - participating in classes and learning about American high school culture. They join our Mandarin courses doing a culture language exchange. Additionally, this year Twin Oaks students have also started working with ASB and SCL to host a lunch time activity on February 5th where they get to share a variety of games, songs, and food from Taiwanese culture with LAHS.
Students collaborate on a large paper spread on the floor, with laptops and markers visible.

Wellness Center

Next week we will be hosting a craft your own glitter jar event in the wellness center on Wednesday, February 4th during ACT. Your student(s) will have the opportunity to make a glitter jar - a simple, hands-on coping  tool that helps slow their breathing, refocus their mind, and create a moment of calm. Your student(s) can shake it, watch the glitter settle, and let their own thoughts settle too. Please encourage your student(s) to reserve their spot on Minga under Juan Arreola. For more upcoming wellness events, check out our February calendar!
