Geometry Honors

 

Recommended Prerequisites:

  • Completion of Algebra I with a C- or better for both semesters

  • Basic Algebra I skills are required, especially basic equation-solving abilities

 

 

 

Recommended Prerequisites:

  • Completion of Algebra I with an A- or better

  • Thorough knowledge of Algebra I is expected in advance and is used throughout the course

  • Student should enjoy mathematics and desire to be challenged

 

 

 

Content:

  • Properties of Polygons

  • Measurement formulas for two and three dimensional figures

  • Triangle congruence and similarity theorems

  • Transformations and isometries

  • Logic and indirect reasoning

  • Basic trigonometric functions

  • Proofs – not as rigorously as in honors

 

 

 

Content:

All topics/content from Geometry, plus:

  • Proofs – emphasized throughout course

  • Angles and perpendicular lines

  • Deductive and inductive reasoning

  • Parallel lines and planes

  • Plane figures

  • Measuring Plane figures

  • Basic trigonometric functions

 

 

 

Activities:

  • Some class time will be spent reviewing topics from Algebra I

  • Frequent quizzes

  • Test at end of chapter

  • Small group projects

  • Multiple modes of instruction including lecture, group work, whole class discussion, etc

 

 

 

Activities:

  • Minimal class time is spent reviewing topics from Algebra I.

  • Approach is theoretical, proof-based

  • Pacing is faster (one section per day)

  • Algebraic properties are used in proofs as well as for computation.

  • One quiz and test per chapter

  • One major group project each semester

  • Daily, oral class participation is expected

  • Students will be expected to work independently as well as in small groups

  • Participation in Continental Math League contest is required

 

 

 

Homework:

  • Assigned daily (including weekends)

  • Assigned problems mainly from the first 2/3 of the problem set and are mostly straightforward questions.

  • Required to read the text, take notes and show work
